I feel that a better title for this would be: “Social Networking Sites. Who gives a shit?” But Facebook seems to be all the rage at this point so I’ll just give them the honors for this rant. If you care about the status of your social networking page, I really can’t relate. Here’s a little ditty about how I feel regarding these sorts of things.

Recently it has been brought to my attention that FB (Facebook), currently the most popular social networking site in the world, has initiated a fee for bands to promote their posts for their audience that chooses to “like” them on the webpage and receive updates regarding a band’s utilization of their “fan page”. When I heard about this and saw the outrage that other fellow musicians were posting on feeds regarding this I couldn’t help but be dumbfounded by their frustration. Don’t get mad yet, band buddies, stay with me for a second here.

Social networking sites all come and go. Right off the top of my head I can think of several sites that used to be “so cool” and are now receiving traffic that can be compared to the heart rates of the dead. Anybody out there remember Classmates? Me too. Barely. How about Myspace? Who the hell uses that page anymore? It sucks now. Friendster, anyone? Me neither. Facebook is NOT something that is going to determine whether your musical/artistic endeavors are successful or not. It’s just “the cool site” right now.

I’m not going to lie. FB has been very helpful for me to promote performances/tours/merchandise releases/etc, but it hasn’t been half as valuable as busking/direct e-mails to people/paper fliers/all of the above that isn’t on a social networking website. If you have a concentrated focus on online promoting, then you should create your own web site. The primary benefit to that, in my mind, is that you have COMPLETE CONTROL about how you want to share any content that you would like to make available for the people who visit you.

Your excuses:

  • “I don’t have the money.” No problem. There are sites that host web space for free if you agree to have advertisements to pay for hosting fees. “That’s not cool!” I know that. How many ads does FB run on your precious “fan page”? Trust me, you’re making them some good money. They just want more now with the “pay to promote” program.

*One of the labels that I work with, Dead Rodent Records, hosts their web site with blogspot. Shit’s free. Check it out: http://deadrodentrecords.blogspot.com

  • “I don’t have the time.” Then shut up and pay FB. I don’t see your investment being that worthwhile though. Remember, social networking sites come and go. If you’re going to drop out coins for somebody to promote a social networking page, why don’t you instead use that money for somebody to design your web page? Price difference? Absolutely. Better investment? Damn right.

  • “I don’t know HTML/coding/etc.” Me neither. I use Hostbaby for my web site and hosting what-nots. They have a website wizard builder, it runs about 20 to 30 bucks a month depending on what package you sign up for and they are available by phone during normal business hours to assist you. FB offers NONE of that for the money you would spend promoting and customizing your “fan page”. They just place ads on other people’s FB sites and the frequency of those placements depends on how much scratch you shell out for them.

  • “But over 500 million people use facebook.” I think that statistic is actually higher now or something. I just haven’t bothered to check because I don’t give a rat’s ass. They are not going to be using that site forever. Something trendier will come along.

  • “I don’t want to.” Then why are you complaining about FB charging you? What the hell? You’re lazy.

Furthermore, if you’re looking to expand your reach on social networking pages, why don’t you just start focusing more energy into other places? FB is not the sole engine that runs the social networking world. It may be popular right now, but there are plenty of other sites that reach people and aren’t so buggy/nasty anyways. Here’s a quick list of all the ones that are right in the front of my mind. I’m sure that you know about the majority if not all of these websites anyhow. Just humor me for a second:

  • Instagram
  • Pinterest
  • LinkedIn
  • Twitter
  • Reddit
  • Tumblr
  • Reverbnation
  • Youtube
  • Vimeo
  • Livejournal
  • Etsy
  • Newgrounds
  • Google+
  • Etc. You get the drift.

Everybody hearing me at this point? As for you Mr. Facebook, lame move. Are we supposed to give a shit about that though? I don’t care. Charge away, assholes. You won’t be here forever so it’s actually pretty smart on your behalf to beef up your savings account and plan for what’s coming. See you in one of those really lame talk shows where washed up celebrities celebrate what used to be popular when they were kids.

Fuck it. –Ando.
